Wyong

Providing opportunities for older women's voices to be heard

Who Are We?

Have you noticed that once your hair turns grey and you have passed that 50 years hurdle that there is a change in some people’s attitude towards you? We call it discrimination and we enjoy changing this attitude.

How do we do this? We find ways to show people how we are ageing in a healthy way through social and intellectual activities.

We use the skills and talents that we have developed in past decades and keep an eye out for what is new on the horizon.

Wyong OWN’s first meeting took place on March 1st 1996 in Margaret Street, Wyong. An early activity was a day at “Rose Cottage” Northern Women’s Health Centre, with some of the OWN NSW Theatre Group. Issues raised at this workshop were transport, politicians, hospital care and housing.

Quickly OWN Wyong settled into its pattern of meeting the first and third Monday of the month. By February 1998 we found a permanent meeting place thanks to the help and cooperation of Rose Cottage, the Northern Women’s Health Centre.

We meet on the 1st Monday of the month at 1pm for discussion and, sometimes, guest speakers. This takes place at “Rose Cottage”, 7 Rose Street, Wyong. During the pandemic we only met for picnics outdoors, but from July 2021, we should be back at Rose Cottage for regular meetings.

Our activities include:

• Group Meetings
• Discussions
• Guest Speakers
• Social Outings.

Currently our social outing takes place on the 3rd Monday of the month, at different times and venues. Some activities are held with our sister group in Gosford. Some members attend Sydney conferences, and marches such as IWD.

Wyong OWN endeavours to provide an opportunity for older women to voice concerns and opinions and be heard. We pass on local community news and raise awareness of women’s issues. Friendship and acceptance of women are important.

Our meetings have seen many informative speakers, educating and informing us on a wide range of topics.

For our social outing we usually meet for lunch at one of the many attractions on the Central Coast. Sometimes we visit art galleries, museums and public gardens.

We continue a long tradition of supporting several local organisations, particularly those assisting local women and children in need.

We look forward to new members joining and forming new friendships.
